Hormones Flashcards
Where is leptin secreted?
cells in adipose tissue
Where does leptin act?
acts on the hypothalamus
What is the role of leptin?
inhibit appetite
What causes the secretion of testosterone?
a gene on the y chromosome causes embryonic gonads to develop testes, which secretes testosterone
What is a gonad?

What controls the menstrual cycle?
negative and positive feedback mechanisms involving ovarian and pituitary hormones
What controls blood sugar?
insulin and glucagon
What happens when blood sugar levels are high?
Insulin is released from beta cells which signal adipose cells to intake glucose
What happens when blood sugar levels are too low?
Glucagon is released from alpha cells which signals liver to turn glycogen into glucose
Where are insulin and glucagon released?
Pancreas
Where is thyroxine released?
thyroid gland
What is the role of thyroxine?
regulate metabolic rate and body temperature
What is a symptom of low iodine levels?
Goitre
What is hypothyroid?
not enough thyroxine
What is hyperthyroid?
too much thyroxine
Where does thyroxine act?
the whole body
