Hormones Flashcards
This hormone stimulates body cells to increase in size and undergo rapid cell division. Increases the rate of movement of aas through the cell membrane, thus increasing the rate of production of proteins. Also causes cells to decrease the rate at which they utilize carbohydrates and to increase the rate at which they use fats. Stimulates you long deletion of bone tissue. Causes the release of somatomedin. Somatomedin then promotes the growth of cartilage.
GH growth hormone
This hormone stimulates and maintains milk production after birth.
Prolactin PRL
This hormone is a glycoprotein which controls the secretion of certain hormones from the thyroid gland.
Thyroid stimulating hormone TSH
Comes from the anterior pituitary
Also controls T3/T4 release
This hormone also comes from the anterior pituitary gland. It is a peptide that controls the secretion of certain hormones from the outer layer of the cortex of the adrenal gland.
Adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH
Cortisol, cortisol, sex hormones
Which hormone is stimulated by estrogen
Follicle-stimulating hormone
Egg growth
This hormone causes the secretion of sex hormones from both males and females, and is needed for the release of eggs from ovaries. At peak levels, this causes ovulation.
Luteinizing hormone LH
This hormone is responsible for the growth and development of egg cell containing follicles in the female ovaries. It also is responsible for the secretion of female sex hormones, estrogens.
Follicle-stimulating hormone FSH
