A hormone is a chemical substance released into the blood
Describe the process of releasing insulin
Eat carbohydrate/sugary foods
High glucose concentration in the blood
Pancreas releases insulin
Glucose is absorbed by the muscles and liver
Liver converts extra glucose into glycogen
Normal concentration of glucose in the blood
Name the types of diabetes
Type 1 and Type 2
What happens when you exercise?
You use up glucose and oxygen to release energy
Where and why is insulin produced?
The pancreas and produces insulin to regulate glucose levels in the blood
Where does the insulin act
It acts in the blood
Give two ways insulin lowers blood glucose levels
Muscles intake more glucose
Liver stores it as glycogen
Increased respiration
What is diabetes
Inability to regulate/control glucose levels in the blood
What are the symptoms of diabetes
thirsty, tiredness, going to the toilet lots,
What are the long term effects of diabetes
damage to cells, damage to eye sight, heart disease, stroke,
How is insulin treated?
Control of diet, control of exercise and insulin injection
