Q

what is the structure of the blood

A

Red blood cells - To carry oxygen from the lungs to every cell in the rest of the body
White blood cells - To fight infection by pathogens and stop disease
Platelets - allows clottgin and scabs to form
Plasma - Carries the blood cells and platelets around the body

Q

What do capillaries?

A

Allows diffusion of gases and nutrients from blood into the body cells
allow substances to exchange at body cells e.g food and oxygen

Q

Why is the muscle in the left side of the heart thicker than the right.

A

It is thicker to the left as it transports blood to the whole body while the right only transports blood to the lungs.

Q

What happens when cholesterol causes a blockage in a heart attach

A

Cholesterol builds up in the walls of the arteries forming plaques. This leads to narrowing to the arteries making it difficult for blood to flow . /this happens in the coronary artery that supply the heart muscle.

Q

What is a stroke?

A

It is a blockage in an artery in the brain. Cells will be starved of oxygen and glucose and will die. It results in paraysis of parts of the body.

Q

What are the positive effects of regular exercise?

A

Relieves stress, increased sense of wellbeing.
have a higher heart rate.
prevents high blood pressure
prevents overweight the body uses more food when exercising
Coronary arteries become wider.

Q

What factors decrease the risk of heart attacks

A

diet low in salt,
don’t smoke
Don’t drink too much, (High alcohol consumption can also damage the heart by increasing blood pressure)
Eat 5 a day - lots of fruit and vegetables
Reduce saturated fats, increase unsaturated fats such as oily fish.
Increase physical activity
eat more fibre rich foods to reduce cholesterol

16
Q

In the plant cell what does the cell wall do?

A

provides support

17
Q

What does the large vacuole do

A

Contains sap, stores water, sugar and minerals i.e. cell sap.

18
Q

what is the function of mitochondria

A

this is the site cell of respiration

19
Q

What does choloroplasts do

A

Contains the green pigment cholorphyll which traps light for photosynthesis

20
Q

What does bacteria cell have

A

Capsule against viruses,
non cellulose cell wall
no nucleus
plasmid
additional loop of dna

21
Q

What is double circulation

A

This means blood travels through the heart twice in one circulation of the body.

22
Q

What is a red blood cell ?

A

Contain haemoglobin (rich in iron) to carry oxygen. Biconcave shape to provide a large surface area for the diffusion of oxygen. No nucleus to provide more space for haemoglobin.

23
Q

What is the function of white blood cells?

A

Defend the body against disease.

24
Q

What is the function of platelets?

A

Convert fibrinogen to fibrin. Fibrin forms a mesh that traps blood. Important in blood clotting and scab formation.

25
Q

What is plasma?

A

Transports blood cells, digested food molecules (e.g. glucose), carbon dioxide, urea and hormones.
