Hormones Flashcards
What are the functions of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin?
- PH: secreted from parathyroid glands. Increases blood calcium level (decrease excretion, increase gut absorption, free Ca from bone)
- Calcitonin: made in the thyroid, decreases blood calcium level
What is the source of growth hormone?
- Anterior pituitary
- Stimulate bone and muscle growth
What is the role of prolactin?
Stimulates milk production and secretion
What are the hormones released by the anterior pituitary?
FLAT PEG
FSH, LSH, ACTH, TSH
Prolactin, Endorphins, Growth hormone
What are the hormones released by the posterior pituitary?
- Oxytocin & Vasopressin (ADH)
- From hypothalamus, but stored in the posterior pituitary
What are the thyroid glands hormones?
- Thyroid hormone
- Calcitonin
Which are the hormones released by the adrenal gland?
- Glucocorticoids (cortex)
- Mineralcorticoids (cortex)
- Epi/NE (medulla)
What are the hormones released by the pancreas?
- Glucagon
- Insulin
- Somatostatin
What is the role of ACTH?
-Stimulates the adrenal cortex to synthesize and secrete glucocorticoids
What is the role of TSH?
-Stimulates the thyroid to produce THs
What is the role of LH?
- Stimulates ovulation in females
- Stimulates testosterone synthesis in males
What is the role of FSH?
- Stimulates follice maturation in females
- Stimulates spermatogenesis in males
What is the function of oxytocin?
- Stimulates uterine contractions during labor
- Stimulates milk secretion during lactation
What is the role of ADH (vasopressin)?
-Stimulates water reabsorption in the kidneys
What is the roles of TH?
-Stimulates metabolic activity
What is the role of glucocorticoids?
-Increase blood glucose levels and decrease protein synthesis
What is the role of Mineralcorticoids?
Increase water reabsorption in the kidneys
What is the role of NE/Epi?
-Increase blood sugar and heart rate
What are the functions of testosterone and estrogen?
To maintain male and female secondary sexual characteristics
What does somatostatin do?
-Suppress secretion of insulin & glucagon
What does progesterone do?
- Promotes the growth and maintenance of endometrium
- From placenta/ovary
What does erythropoietin do?
- Stimulate RBC production in bone marrow
- Source is the kidneys
What is the atrial natriuretic hormone?
- From the heart
- Involved in osmoregulation
What is thymosin hormone?
- From thymus
- stimulates T-cell development
What are the effects of calcitonin?
REDUCE BLOOD Ca LEVELS
- Increase Ca excretion in kidneys
- Decrease absorption in gut
- Increase storage in the bone
