Hormones Flashcards
Where is FSH CREATED
The pituitary gland
What’s does FSH do
helps control the menstrual cycle and stimulates the growth of eggs in the ovaries.
Where is LH made
The pituitary gland
What does LH do
triggers the release of an egg from the ovary.
Where is oestrogen made
The ovaries
What does oestrogen do
Thickens the uterus lining
Triggers the release of LH
Where is progesterone made
secreted by the ovarian corpus luteum during the first ten weeks of pregnancy
What does progesterone do
- The progesterone prepares the body for pregnancy in the event that the released egg is fertilised
- If the egg is not fertilised, the corpus luteum breaks down, the production of progesterone falls and a new menstrual cycle begins.
- maintains uterus lining
Where is insulin produced
Pancreas
What does insulin do
Decreases blood sugar
Insulin helps blood sugar enter the body’s cells so it can be used for energy. Insulin also signals the liver to store blood sugar for later use. Blood sugar enters cells, and levels in the bloodstream decrease, signaling insulin to decrease too
Where is glucagon created
Pancreas
What’s does glucagon do
The hormone glucagon instructs the liver to break down some of its stored glycogen into the blood. This raises your blood glucose level once again
Why do we need glycogen
Glycogen is essential for helping regulate your blood sugar levels and providing energy for exercise
Where is adrenaline produced
Adrenal gland
What does adrenaline do
Increases heart rate, blood flow, glycogen
Provides oxygen and glucose for respiration
