Hormones Flashcards
What are hormones?
A hormone is a chemical substance, produced by a gland and carried in the bloodstream, which alters the activity of specific target organs.
What happens to a hormone after its used?
it is destroyed by the liver.
Describe the effects of hormones
Hormones are a chemical type of signal which travels through the blood stream which have long lasting effects but are slow to take place.
Thyroid gland
thyroxine
pituitary gland
- anti-diuretic hormone
- Controlling the water content of the blood
- Increases reabsorption of water by the collecting ducts
- The hypothalamus detects changes in hormone levels and will release hormones which control the pituitary gland or other organs.
- The hormones from the hypothalamus and pituitary can also act on other glands to stimulate the release of different types of hormones and bring about effects.
pancrease
insulin which targets liver and controls blood glucose levels, and Increases conversion of glucose into glycogen for storage
ovaries
oestrogen
adrenal glands
adrenaline, targets organs in the respiratory and circulatory systems. Preparation for ‘fight or flight’. Increases breathing rate, heart rate, flow of blood to muscles, conversion of glycogen to glucose
What is homeostasis?
this is the maintenance of constant internal conditions in an organism.
