Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
7 things to know about every hormone
A
- Name and where it comes from
- Main stimulus
- Main inhibitor
- Where does it go?
- What is main action?
- What is second messenger?
- Miscellaneous syndromes
2
Q
Erythropoietin
A
- Made by renal parenchymal cell
- Stimulus = hypoxia
- Inhibitor = increased oxygen
- Where it goes = bone marrow
- What it does = stimulate erythropoiesis
- Second messenger = tyrosine kinase
3
Q
Aldosterone
A
- Made in zona glomerulosa
- Stimulus order = hyperkalemia, hypovolemia, hyponatremia
- Inhibitor = hypervolemia
- Where it goes = Late DCT, early collecting duct and ascending colon
- What it does = stimulate synthesis of Na-K pumps and increases their activity
* bring in sodium
* kick out K and H - Second messenger = none
- Miscellaneous syndrome =
* Conn syndrome - too much aldosterone
* Adrenal insufficiency - too little aldosterone
4
Q
Cortisol
A
- Made in zona fasciculata
- Stimulus order = stress and hypoglycemia
- Inhibitor = hyperglycemia
- Where it goes = everywhere
- What it does = upregulates all receptors during stress
- Second messenger = none
- Miscellaneous syndrome =
* Adrenal insufficiency - too little cortisol
* Cushing’s syndrome - too much cortisol
5
Q
Testosterone
A
- Made in zona reticularis
