Hormone Functions Flashcards
Testosterone
Made in testes. Promotes sperm formation and development of male secondary sexual characteristics
FSH
- Made in pituitary gland
- Control menstrual cycle and stimulates growth of eggs
LH
- Made in pituitary gland
- Triggers the release of an egg from the ovary
Estrogen
- Made in ovaries
- Thickens ovary walls and keeps cholesterol in control
Progesterone
- Made in
- Thickens the endometrium and preps to accept fertilized egg
- Prohibits uterus contractions that would reject the egg
Prolactin
- Made in pituitary gland
- Milk production and development of mammary glands
Oxytocin
- Made in pituitary gland
- Released largely in labour and stimulation of the nipples
- Facilitates breastfeeding
Erythropoietin
- Made in kidneys
- Stimulates production and maintenance of red blood cells
Thymosin
- Made in thymus gland
- Stimulates development of T cells
Insulin
- Made in pancreas
- Allows the entry of glucose into cells for energy
- Stores excess glucose in liver as glycogen
Glucagon
- Made in pancreas
- Promotes breakdown of glycogen to glucose
- Promotes glucose synthesis and inhibits glycogen synthesis
Calcitonin
- Made in thyroid
- Calcium release from bones to bloodstream
- Absorption of calcium from food
T4 and T3
- Made in thyroid gland and requires iodine
- Regulate body temp, metabolism and heart-rate
Parathyroid hormone
- Made in parathyroid
- Calcium release from bones to bloodstream
- Absorption of calcium from food
Epinephrine
- Made in adrenal gland
- Raise blood glucose levels and cardiac output
Cortisol
- Made in adrenal gland
- Increase glucose levels
- Increase production of ATP with glucose
- Limits nonessential functions in a flight-or-fight situation
Angiotensin & Renin
- Made in Angiotensin: Liver
Renin: Kidney - Help regulate blood pressure
Antidiuretic hormone
- Made in hypothalamus
- Kidney releases water and decreases urine production
