Hormonal Coordination Flashcards
What are the endocrine (hormonal) glands?
Pituitary Thyroid Pancreas Adrenal Ovaries Testes
What is the role of the hormones in the pituitary gland?
1 controls growth in children
2 stimulates thyroid gland to make thyroxine to control metabolic rate
3 in women- stimulates ovaries to produce and release eggs and make female sex hormone -> oestrogen
4 in men - stimulates testes to make sperm and the male sex hormone -> testosterone
5 pituitary gland is master gland secreting several hormones and some of these hormones stimulate release of hormones from other glands
What Is the role of hormones in the thyroid gland
Controls metabolic rate of the body
What is the role of the hormone in the pancreas
Controls the levels of glucose in the blood
What is the role of the hormone in the adrenal gland
Prepares the body for stressful situations eg fight or flight responses
What is the role of the hormones in the ovaries
Controls development of female secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the menstrual cycle
What is the role of the hormones in the testes
Controls development of male secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the production of sperm
What is a hormone
Chemicals released by endocrine system glands into the blood stream
What is the difference between hormones and nerves
Hormones - slower acting, chemical, longer lasting, in blood stream
Nerves - fast acting, electrical, shorter lasting, in neurones - motor, sensory, relay
What is the endocrine system
Glands that secrete hormones into the blood stream
Why is the pituitary gland called the master gland
It coordinates many of the other endocrine glands.
Pituitary secretes a variety of different hormones into the blood in response to changes body conditions
