Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment despite changes in the surroundings
What does this mean?
Homeo = similar
Stasis = remaining constant
Monitoring and keeping levels of oxygen, water, carbon dioxide
,blood sugar and body temperature constant
Homeostasis is the regulation of internal conditions to maintain optimal conditions for enzyme action and cell function
What are the 3 main cell functions?
Controlling water content
Blood glucose concentration
Body temperature
Homeostasis involves what?
Control
Coordination
Changes occur eg exercise makes muscles hotter, eating raises blood sugar, hot weather causes water and salt through sweat
How does the body control changes?
automatic control systems
1 The nervous system has nervous responses to change
2 The hormone system has chemical responses to change
Define receptors
Receptors - cells that detect stimuli, eg taste on tongue, sound in ear - part of complex organs eg retina of eye covered in light receptor cells
Define effectors
Respond to nervous impulses and bring about change.
Muscles and glands and respond in different ways
Muscles contract in response to nerve impulse
Glands secrete hormones
Define coordination centres
Areas that receive and process information from receptors
Send out signals
Coordinate response of body
Eg brain is coordination centre for nervous system and hormonal system
Eg spinal chord, pancreas
