HOPE Flashcards
Rubber fins are used to
help kick faster and build
strength and technique, but
are illegal in a race.
Swim fins
Swimmers use these
plastic devices to build
arm and shoulders
strength while refining
hand-pulling technique.
Hand paddles
A kickboard is a foam
board that swimmers use to
support the weight of the
upper body while they
focus on kicking.
Kickboard
Often used at the same time as hand
paddles, pull buoys support swimmer’s
legs (and prevent them from kicking)
while they focus on pulling.
Pull buoy
is a combination of four different
swimming styles—butterfly, backstroke,
breaststroke, and freestyle—into one race. This
race is either swum by one swimmer as
individual medley (IM) or by four swimmers as a
medley relay.
MEDLEY SWIMMING
consists of a single swimmer swimming
equal distances of four different strokes within one
race. Butterfly – Backstroke – Breaststroke - Freestyle
Individual medley
consists of four different swimmers in one
relay race, each swimming one of the four strokes.
Backstroke – Breaststroke – Butterfly - Freestyle
Medley relay
The front crawl is
the fastest of the
competitive
swimming
strokes.
FREESTYLE
Is the only one of
the four
competitive
strokes swum on
the back.
Backstroke
Is the most
popular
swimming
stroke of all.
Breaststroke
Is the second
fastest swimming
stroke, and is also
quite exhausting to
swim.
Butterfly Stroke
