Homogeneous Aqueous Systems Flashcards
Strong electrolyte
A solute that is completely ionized in solution
Electrolytes
Substances that dissolve as ions. A solution of an electrolyte will conduct an electric current, whereas a solution of a non electrolyte is nonconducting. They conduct electricity when dissolved in H2O or when melted
Weak electrolyte
A weak electrolyte is only partially ionized
Hydrates
Water is an integral part of it’s crystal structure
Water of hydration
Water in a crystal that is an integral part of the crystal structure
Solvation
The process where solute ions become surrounded by solvent molecules
Solute
Minor component of a solution
Solvent
Major component of a solution
Effloresce
A process where the water of hydration is lost from a hydrate that is exposed to air
Dessicants
Drying agents
Hygroscopic
Compounds able to remove moisture from air
Solution
Homogeneous mixture (.1 nm 10^-9 m). Particles are completely dissolved.
Colloid
(1-1000 nm), in between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture
Suspension
(>1 Mm), heterogeneous mixture
Dissolution
To increase the rate of dissolution (solid to liquid): stir, heat the temperature or increase the surface area. To decrease the rate of dissolution (gaseous solute in a liquid solvent): increase the temperature
