homo nes Flashcards
3 function of hormones
- Regulate homeostasis, maintain constant internal environment
- control growth metabolism
- regulate activities of diff systems so they coordinated
6 characteristics of hormones
- chemical messenger
- carried in blood
- effect on target cells is slow due to time required to travel thru bloodstream to target cells
- produced in minute amts
- one or more specific target organs
- destroyed by liver, or excreted by kidney
6 effects of adrenaline
- Increase in metabolic rate, more energy is released
- Rate of heartbeat and bp increase, oxygen and glucose carried faster to muscles
- vasoconstriction of blood vessels in skin; vasodilation of blood vessels in brain and skeletal muscle (more blood sent to brain and muscles; skin appear pale)
- blood clot rate increase
- Activate enzyme to break glycogen to glucose
- Pupil dilate, hair muscle contract
3 effect of insulin
(bind to receptors on liver cell) which modulate enzymes to:
increased uptake of glucose to cells
convert excess glucose to glycogen for storage in liver and muscles
Inhibit breakdown of glycogen to glucose in skeletal muscles and liver cells
Effects of gluacagon (3)
(bind to receptors on liver cell) which modulate enzymes to:
inhibit synthesis of glycogen from glucose in liver and skeletal muscles
produce glucose from other sources like amino acid
stimulate breakdown of glycogen to glucose in liver cells
Type 2 diabeties characteristics
Pancreas produce insulin normally
cells insulin resistance
lower converion of glucose to glycogen so high glucose lvls
Type 1 diabeties
Islets of langerhams cant produce insulin
