What are the factors affecting clearance rates? (4)
- Where homicide took place
- Motive
- Method of killing
- Offender-victim relationship
What is the ‘golden hour’?
Why is it important? (3)
1st hour of investigation (shows the importance of the initial response):
- Establish cause of death
- Secure evidence
- Identify victim, identify and arrest suspect
What are the 4 different classifications?
A+: Public concern, media intervention. Normal staffing levels insufficient
A: Grave public concern/ vulnerabilities at risk. Offender identity is unknown. Investigation requires sig resources
B: Identity of offender is unknown, risk to public is low. Normal resources required
C: Identity of offender is known, securing evidence is achieved easily
What are ‘self-solvers’ and ‘who-dunnits’? What percentage do each make up?
Self-solvers: (70%). These are category C, where the offender is known
Who-dunnits: (30%). These are category A+, A, B, C, where the offender is not quickly identified. They have pronounced media interest and require more resources.
