A
  • Hermes in some ways resembles Prometheus because they are both tricky
  • Hermes’ day of birth; born to Maia and Zeus
  • Gets out of his cradle and invents fire and sacrifice
  • Sees a turtle lying on its back; Hermes rips the turtle out of its shell and hollows out the shell invents the lyre
  • Hears some cattle, sacred to Apollo, off in the distance
  • Steals the cattle, convincing them to walk backwards
  • Apollo discovers the missing cattle and suspects Hermes
  • Finds Hermes and Apollo if very mad at him, who is in his cradle
  • Zeus has to mediate
  • Hermes gives Apollo the lyre as a gift to appease him
  • Hermes and Apollo become friends, half-brothers, and jokers
