Homeostasis Flashcards
The range of normal blood pH is between 7.35 and 7.45 metabolic acidosis is a condition that occurs when blood pH falls below 7.35
analysis of a patient’s blood revealed that the hydrogen ion concentration was 5.50×10^-8 mol dm-3 use the formula pH =-log 10 (H+) to calculate the pH of the patient’s blood
use your answer to determine whether the patient could be suffering from metabolic acidosis
pH = -log [5.50 x 10^-8
= 7.26
Yes the patient is suffering from metabolic acidosis because the blood pH has fallen below 7.35
The range of normal blood pH is between 7.35 and 7.45 metabolic acidosis is a condition that occurs when blood pH falls below 7.35
Why is it important to maintain a blood pH in the normal range
It’s important that we maintain a blood pH in the normal range because enzymes in the blood work best within the normal blood pH
If blood pH becomes too high or too low the ionic and hydrogen bonds supporting that the shape of the enzymes are active sites will be broken and the enzymes will become denatured this means that they won’t be able to catalyse metabolic reactions
