Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis.
Maintaining a stable internal environment.
Stimulus?
A change in the environment.
Receptor?
The cells that detect the changes in the environment.
What is the order in which they happen?
Stimulus, receptor, sensory neurone, CNS, motor neurone, effector, response.
What is a synapse?
A gap between two neurones.
What does the coordination centre do?
Receives and processes the information then organises a response.
What is the name of the long part of the nerve cell that carries the signal?
Axon.
What is the function of the nerve cell?
To carry electrical impulses around the body.
What are hormones?
They are chemical molecules released directly into the blood.
Hormones are produced by the _______ ______
encondrine glands.
What does insulin do?
Regulates the blood glucose levels. Helps glucose to move from the blood into the cells.
What do effectors do?
They respond to nervous impulses.
What does FSH stimulate?
Stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
What does oestrogen stimulate?
Stimulates the release of LH.
What does LH stimulate?
Stimulates the release of an egg (ovulation).
