Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is homeostasis?
A
The regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes
2
Q
In homeostasis what conditions need to remain optimum?
A
Water levels
Body temperature
Blood glucose concentration
3
Q
How are the optimum conditions controlled in homeostasis?
A
Automatic control centres in the body
These may involve a nervous response or a chemical (ie hormonal) response
4
Q
How do the control centres work in homeostasis?
A
- Cells called receptors detect changes called stimuli
- Receptors send signals to a coordination centre (brain, spinal cord, pancreas)
- A response brought about by a muscle or a gland (effectors)
- Optimum conditions are restored
