Magnitude of change in a monitored variable is snesed by receptor => information is fed to integrating centre to be compared with reference level => any difference generates a signal => fed to effector mechanism => response stimulated => corrects original change

Additional receptors anticipate change and activate the response earlier

Only the plasma can be sampled, so only compartments of which plasm is a component can be sampled directly
