HOMEOSTASIS Flashcards
Homeostasis is
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal
environment.
how is melanin produced how does it affect the skin
There are specialised pigment cells in the basal
layer and epidermis. These produce a black pigment, melanin, which gives the skin its colour. The more melanin, the darker is the skin.
The thickness of the epidermis and the abundance
of hairs vary in
different parts of the body
outer layer of epidermis
made up of dead cells
middle layer of epidermis
made up of living cells becomes dead as they start approaching the surface!
inner layer of epidermis?
with a pigment [melanin ] to absorb a ultra violet rays from sunlight have cell division to repair
The dermis contains
connective tissue with hair
follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, blood vessels
and nerve endings
There is usually a layer of………… beneath the dermis.
adipose
tissue (a fat deposit)
The outermost layer of dead cells of the epidermis
helps to reduce
water loss and provides a barrier
against bacteria
. In white-skinned people, more melanin is produced in
response to exposure to sunlight, giving rise to
tan
Scattered throughout the skin are large numbers of
tiny sense receptors, which give rise to
sensations of
touch, pressure, heat, cold and pain.
job of receptors
These make us
aware of changes in our surroundings and enable us
to take action to avoid damage, to recognise objects
by touch and to manipulate objects with our hands.
