Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
-the maintenance of a constant internal environment
-Mechanisms are in place to keep optimum conditions despite internal and external changes. This is needed for enzyme action and cell functions
what is an automatic control system?
-a system that regulates your internal environment which include both nervous and hormonal communication systems
-e.g. there are control systems that maintain your body temperature and blood glucose
What is the purpouse of negative feedback?
-your automatic systems use it as a mechanism to keep your internal environment stable
-when the level of something gets too high or low (e.g. water or glucose) the body using negative feedback to brig it back to normal
How does the negative feedback system work?
1)the receptor detects a stimulus-level is too high or low
2)the coordination centre(e.g.the brain) receives and interprets the information, then organises a response
3)the effector produces a response which counteracts the change and restores the optimum level- the level decreases or increases
