homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis
maintenance of a constant internal environment eg temperature, water
list the body responses to the environment being too cold
shivering - muscles contract quickly to make heat
goosebumps - hairs trap body heat
reduced sweat production
vasoconstriction - blood vessels become narrower, conserving heat
list the body responses to the environment being too hot
sweat produced to release heat energy
hair lays flat
vasodilation - blood vessels dilate letting heat to be lost
define negative feedback
automatic response to changing conditions and returning them back to normal
this may involve either nervous responses or chemical responses
what is the body’s sensor
hypothalamus - found in the thermoregulatory region of the brain
what is change in temperature detected by
thermoreceptors
skin receptors
hypothalamus
list the different levels maintained by homeostasis
temperature
water
sugar levels
define receptor
cells that receives a stimuli
define coordination centres
receives and processes information from receptors around the body eg spine, brain
define effectors
produces a response to a detected stimulus eg muscles, glands
