Maslows hierarchy (top to bottom):

List 4 causes of homelessness:
1) Relationship breakdown
- Mental illness
- Domestic abuse
- Disputes with parents
What health problems are faced by the homeless which aren’t normally faced by those in homes?
- TB
- Poor dental health
- Respiratory issues
- Injuries following violence and rape
- Lack of sexual health (smears and contraception)
- Mental illness
Outline some barriers present for travellers/gypsies when accessing health care:
- Reluctance of GPs to register Gypsies and Travellers
- Poor reading and writing skills
- Communication difficulties
- Mistrust of professionals
Outlines some barriers to healthcare for the homeless:
- Poor access
- Lack of integration between primary care and other agencies
- Other priorities (Marslows Hierachry)
What is an asylum seeker?
A person who has made an application for refugee status
What is a refugee?
A person granted asylum and refugee status. Reapply in 5 years
What is humanitarian protection?
Failed to demonstrate claim for asylum but face serious threat to life if returned. 3 years then reapply
How do asylum seekers live?
- Little choice
- Vouchers
- NASS support
- Full NHS access
- Not allowed to work
What health issues may be more common in refugees/asylum seekers?
- Injuries from travelling/war
- Malnutrition
- Mental health: PTSD, depression, sleep disturbance, psychosis, self harm
What two services are available to those who are homeless?
- Homeless assessment & support service (HASS)
- Travellers team
