What is a hold?
A hold is an IFR maneuver used to keep the airplane in a specific protected area for a certain amount of time
Why are we issued holds?
We cant pull to the side of the road. There are various reasons an aircraft may be requested to hold, including congestion at the destination airport, weather, runway closures, another aircraft on the IFR approach into an uncontrolled airport, etc
What are the sides of a hold?
Holding Fix Inbound Leg Outbound Leg Fix End Outbound End Non holding unprotected side Holding protected side
Whats included in a holding clearance?
Cardinal direction Fix Radial Length of time or miles direction of turn EFCT Current time
What are the holding airpseeds?
6,000 - 200 knots
6001- 14,000 230 knots
14001 and above - 265 knots
What instructions can be given for a parallel hold?
Hold E of the PDZ VOR
090 Radial
Current Heading 150
What instructions can be given for a Teardrop hold?
Hold E of the PDZ VOR
