Hock Reading 3:4 Flashcards
The Bobo doll study suggests that ________ is learned or (can be learned?)
agression
Who was the leading psychologist of the Bobo study?
Albert Bandura
One of the issues Bandura wanted to examine in this study was whether such_____ learning would generalize to settings in which the child was ______ from the model after observing the models behavior.
- Imitative
- Separated
What were the four offered predictions by Banduras and his associates?
- Children who witnessed a model being aggressive would imitate the adults aggression even if the model was no longer present
- Nonaggressive models would have an aggression-inhibiting effect
Children exposed to non-aggressive models would not only be less aggressive than those who observed the aggression but also significantly less aggressive than a control group of children who were exposed to no model at all.
- Children would imitate the behavior of the same-sex model to a greater degree than a model of opposite sex
- Boys should be more predisposed than girls toward imitating aggression
Participants
36 boys 36 girls ranging from ages 3-6 years old
Average age = 4.4 months old
Experimental Conditions
24 children in the control group
48 children divided into two groups one exposed to aggressive model one to nonaggressive models –> divided into males and females –> divided to half exposure to same sex model half opposite sex
8 total experimental groups
Measures aggression levels prior to experiment
Explain the experiment (not including results)
Each child was individually exposed to various environmental procedures.
The experimenter brought the child to a playroom where they encountered an adult model who was invited by experimenter to “join in the game”. the adult model was then taken to a set of toys with he Bobo doll and tinker toy set/ mallet etc. It was then explained that the Bobo doll tinker toy set was only for the model to play with. Once the experimenter left the model didn’t continuously play with the tinker toys rather stop and become aggressive towards the Bobo doll. Sitting, kicking, punching, verbally aggressive “ hit him down , throw him in the air etc.” LASTED 10 MIN
After 10 min the experimenter returned and took the child to a separate play room filled with tons of elaborate toys then let the child play for 10 min. Then they told the child they were going to move rooms as that room was for other children. The child was then placed in a third play room with less elaborate toys some included the Bobo doll and aggressive toys like a mallet fake gun etc. LASTED 20 MIN
What were the results of the Bobo doll experiment?
Children exposed to the violent models tended to imitate the exact violent behaviors they observed
specific acts of verbal or physical aggression were virtually never observed in the participants exposed to the nonaggressive models or in the control group that was no exposed to any model
Prediction that nonaggressive models would have a violence inhibiting effect= inconclusive
Gender differences and same gender model having higher influences = significant results
Conclusion of experiment?
Childrens observation of adults engaging in these behaviors sends a message to the child that this form of violence is permissible, thus weakening the child’s inhibitions against aggression
Culture+ men + aggression
a mans modeling of aggression carried with it the weight of social acceptability and was therefore more powerful in its ability to influence the observer
