HIV infection – primary (acute) stage (0 – 10 months)
Primary infection
A
= fever, rash, swollen lymph glands
= virus infection of CD4 cells within a few hours of entry
= virus levels rise in blood

Immune response
A
= CD4 (red line) and CD8 (orange line) cells increase
= antibody (blue line) levels rise
= virus levels in blood fall, many infected CD4 cells destroyed
= CD4 numbers rebound – some remain infected = virus reservoirs
