HIV/AIDS Flashcards
Acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
Disease that interferes w/ body’s ability to fight infection
Final stage of HIV
Approx. 10 years between infection and AIDS
Virus damages person’s immune system by killing T cells
can be fatal
Carrier
Someone who carries the HIV virus and can transmit it onto others
Cure for HIV/AIDS
No cure is available
Vaccine in production for HIV
One type of vaccine won’t work on another type of AIDS
HIV/AIDS lasts for rest of life
Symptoms of HIV
Swollen Lymph Nodes Tiredness Diarrhea Weight Loss Fever Become worse over time
Infection of HIV
1) virus enters through broken skin or mucous membranes 2) HIV invades host cell (T-Cells) 3)Virus uses cell to reproduce 4) Cell is destoryed 5) Virus spreads to other cells 6) Process repeats
What happens after HIV progresses?
T-Cell count drops - body becomes weaker
Body loses ability to fight infections and diseases that a normal immune system could fight
Ways HIV can spread
Sexual relations w/ an infected person (Unprotected Sex)
Blood transfusions
IV drugs
Using a contaminated needle
Sharing needles w/ drug needles
Only way to avoid HIV is to abstain against all the behaviors above
Mother to baby via breastfeeding or through birth
Ways HIV can’t spread
Air via coughing or sneezing
Casual contact (hand shake,)
Using same clothing, towels, sports equipment, etc as an HIV+ person
Using same shower, bathtub as HIV+ person
Using same eating utensils as HIV+ person
Tick/Mosquito bites
Blood donations
swimming in same pool as HIV+ person
Preventive behaviors to HIV
Avoiding contact w/ bodily fluids and blood Knowing personal histories Abstinence Avoid drugs Get checkups Be responsible
Onset of AIDS
T-Cell count under 200
Opportunistic Diseases
Diseases that affect people w/ weakened immune systems
Ex. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
Cancer of the cervix
Kaposi’s sarcoma a type of skin
cancer.
Fungal infections in the mouth and lungs (thrush).
blindness
How to get tested for HIV
Doctor
Western blot test
Elisa test
If person has HIV antibodies they are HIV positive
