Circulatory System Flashcards
Why is the Circulatory system Called the transit system?
Heart acts as a pump for blood to move around the body.
Parts of circulatory system
Heart, Blood, and blood vessels.
Three types of Blood vessels
Arteries (carry blood with oxygen away from heart)
Veins (Carry blood without oxygen to the heart)
Capillaries (connect veins and arteries (one cell wide))
Materials carried in blood
oxygen, nutrients, germ fighters, hormones, and waste
Pulmonary
Lungs (pumps oxygen poor blood)
Why is part of the heart red, while the other part is blue?
Red parts have oxygen rich blood
Blue parts have oxygen poor blood
Four types of blood
O, A, AB, B
Four chambers of the heart
Right Ventricle, Left Ventricle, Left Atrium, Right Atrium
Anemia
Lack of Red Blood Cells in body
Eating red meats and iron rich vegetables can cure it
What happens when a heart attack occurs?
Parts of heart are deprived of blood because of blockage of arteries. Blood can’t move around body
Cholesterol
Type of fat in fatty foods. Can clog up arteries. Can be removed with surgery.
Arteriosclerosis
When arteries become rigid and harden up.
Atherosclerosis
When fat builds up on walls of Arteries
Ways to take care of circulatory system
having a healthy weight, exercise, not smoking or using alcohol, having less stress, and having a diet rich in fiber and chicken and poor in red meats.
Treatments for Circulatory Problems
Medications
Angioplasty (widening of blood vessels to allow blood to move through)
Bypass Surgery (Veins are detoured to heart in case of emergency)
heart valve surgery (valve replaced w/ artificial one)
Pacemaker
Ways to prevent heart disease
Having a healthy weight, exercising, eating a diet high in fiber and low in red meats, avoiding anxiety, and not using alcohol/tobacco
Risk factors for Heart Disease that can be controlled
Excess weight, tobacco use, alcohol use, poor eating habits, stress, physical inactivity
Defibrillator/AED locations in SW
Outside of gym, inside gym offices, near room 202 (FCS), nurses office, near room A3
Symptoms of Heart Attacks
Pain in the shoulders, jaw, teeth, neck, or arms, chest discomfort, lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath, pressure, fullness, squeezing, and pain in the chest. A person can also experience pain before a heart attack.
What should you do in a medical emergency?
Contact 911
Why should you contact a fire department instead of 911?
Faster and Free
Lowest pressure against the artery wall when the heart relaxes
diastolic
Higher number in blood pressure
systolic
What is plaque made of?
Cholestorl
Hypertension
high blood pressure
condition where doesn’t contain enough RBC’s
Anemia
condition where RBC’s can’t carry enough oxygen
Anemia
Pulmonary circulation
deoxygenated blood goes to lungs to get oxygenated
systemic circulation
blood w/ oxygen goes to cells and distributes it
hemophilla
Disease where blood doesn’t clot well
Good cholestoral
HDL
Bad cholestoral
LDL
