It infects & destroys the Th cell/CD4 cell which is necessary for development of PLASMA & CYTOTOXIC T CELLS.

HIV is a retrovirus meaning it carries gene info in the form of RNA not DNA & uses reverse transcriptase to convert RNA to double stranded DNA.
