HIV Flashcards
What does HIV stand for?
Human immunodeficiency virus
What is the result of HIV
AIDS
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
How can the virus infect people?
Enter the body by infected bodily fluids such as; sexual intercourse, infected needles, blood infection of wounds, blood transfusions, mother to child across the placenta and breast milk
Symptoms of HIV
Fever Sore throat Body rash Tiredness Joint pain Muscle pain Swollen gland
Symptoms of AIDS
Weight loss Chronic diarrhoea Night sweats Skin problems Recurrent infections Serious life threatening illnesses
What does HIV do?
HIV infected and eventually kills helper TCells which act as host cells for the virus.
How do people develop AIDS
People infected with HIV develop AIDS when the helper TCell numbers in their body reach a critical low level
Parts of the HIV virus?
Genetic material/RNA Transmembrane glycoproteins Docking glycoproteins Lipid envelope Reverse transcriptase Matrix Capsid
What is reverse transcriptase?
Enzyme that catalysed the production of DNA from RNA. This ability means that HIV belongs to a group called retroviruses
How does HIV infect host cells?
As HIV is a virus it is unable to replicate on its own, it uses its genetic material to instruct the host cells biochemical mechanisms to produce the parts needed to make new HIV
