HIV Flashcards
1
Q
How is AIDS defined?
A
- Low CD4+ cell count (cell<200/microL)
- 1 or more typical opportunistic infections
2
Q
What is the malignancy most associated with HIV?
A
Kaposi’s sarcoma
3
Q
What is the process of HIV replication?
A
- Attachment to CD4+ T helper cells via gp120-TCR bonding, initiating bonding & uncoating of viral RNA
- Viral DNA formed by reverse transcriptase and integrated into host DNA by integrase
- Synthesis of new viral parts using new viral DNA & host cell replication machinery
- Translated proteins move to cell surface and get cleaved by proteases before budding off as newly formed HIV viruses
4
Q
What are the mains serological markers to be detected?
A
- p24 antigen (titer decreases >2mths as Ab produced)
- p24 Ab (IgG)
5
Q
Describe the structure of HIV.
A
- gp120 & gp41 on surface membrane
- p24 capsid
- Capsid contains integrase, protease & reverse transcriptase
6
Q
How is HIV spread?
A
- Vertical transmission
- Blood transmission
- Sexual route (chloe prob will kena)
7
Q
How is HIV diagnosed?
A
- ELISA serology
- Confirmatory Western blot test
8
Q
What are the 3 stages on untreated HIV?
A
- Primary infection –> burst of viremia, transient decline in CD4+ T cells
- Latency –> chronic low levels of viremia as immune system fights off virus
- Progression to AIDS –> CD4+ cell death outweighs production
