Why was it called the great war?
The biggest war that had every happened with millions of men being involved over a 4 year period

More than 9 million
Why did the great war start?

What is Nationalism?
People thinking their country is the best and that winning wars proves it
What is militarism?
People being very proud of their armys and navies, wanting them to be the best, spending more and more money, getting into an arms race
What is imperialism?
Lots of countries as well as britain wanted to gain controll over other nations. Tension and rivalry was caused amongst European countries. They started seeing eachother as threats
What are alliances?
Countries come together for back up in war
What was the Triple Entente?
Britain, France and Russia came together in an alliance
What was the Triple Alliance?
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy came together
When did WW1 start?
28th June 1914
How did Franz Ferdinand’s murder lead to war?
His assassination led to the July crisis and precipitated Austria-Hungary’ declaration of war against Serbia.
What was Germany’s master plan?
The Nazi German government’s plan for the genocide and ethnic cleansing on a vast scale, and colonization of Central and Eastern Europe by Germans
How and why did the Schlieffen Plan go wrong?
Lack of manpower
Underestimation of the speed of Russian troop deployments
The belief that Britain would not defend neutral Belgium
