What did they supply Britain with
Over 10,000 men for their army, navy and airforce during WW2
Why was life hard for the Carribean islanders when the war was over and went back home
- Devastation from hurricanes
- No tourist indurstry
- Price of sugar went down
No oppurtunities to make money
What was The British Nationality Act (1948)
Everyone in the commonwealth (known as the Empire) became a british passport holder and had the right to live and work in Britain
Why did people from the commonwealth want to come to Britain
- They felt British
- They already spoke English at home
- They admired the Queen
- They saw oppurtunities in Britain that they didnt have at home
What jobs did people from the commonwealth do when they arrived in Britain
They became bus and train drivers, became postmen and helped in hostpitals
What was their experience when they arrived in Britain
- Not welcomed by everyone
- Suffered racsism
- Got menial, low paid jobs even if they had good qualifications
- They couldnt get good housing
Give an example of bad racsism experienced by people from the commonwealth
