What is gravida?
Number of pregnancies a woman has had - including current
What is parity?
Number of deliveries of 24 week or more
Plus those ending below before 24 weeks where there was sign of life
e.g. A woman pregnant with her 3rd child but has had 1 miscarriage and 1 stillbirth

What do you need to ask about in an obstetric history?
Current gestation Previous pregnancies Presenting problem Current pregnancy Hx Gynae Hx PMH Family Hx Drug and Social Hx
What do you want to find out about previous pregnancies?
Gestation at delivery Birth weight Mode of delivery Complications - for child and mother Miscarriage, ectopics, terminations, still births?
How would you explore the patients presenting complaint?
As with any other Hx
Review symptoms - bleeding, spotting, discharge, abdomen pain, pruritus, headache, reduced fetal movements
What do you want to find out about the current pregnancy?
When they were booked Results of scans and screening What scans they have had Fetal movements Fetal growth Hospital admissions? Planned mode of delivery
What would you want to ask about a patients gynae Hx?
First day of last menstrual period Normal cycle Previous contraception used? Cervical smears and outcomes? STI's?
What is especially important to find out about in general history for obstetrics?
Diabetes Hypertension Epilepsy Mental health Folic acid intake Smoking, alcohol and drug's
What do you ask about in a gynae history?
Menstrual History Contraception Cervical smear Obstetric history Past gynae problems - investigations and treatment Previous Gynae operations
Usual history things - presenting complaint, family hx etc.
What do you ask about in a menstrual history?
First day of last menstrual period Number of days of bleeding and flow Length and regularity of cycle Abnormal bleeding? Menarche and menopause
