What do “flashes” suggest
Flashes are called photopsia
These suggest posterior vitreous detachment
What may symptoms of vitreous detachment precede?
Symptoms of vitreous detachment may precede retinal detachment
Patient may complain of a progressively developing field defect, like a “shadow” or a “curtain”
Retinal detachment
Symptoms of this eye condition may be worse in the morning
Blepharitis

What is the sclera?
The white outer layer of the eye, at the front it is continuous with the cornea
Is the eye dry or gritty?
Keratoconjunctivitis

Keratitis, iritis

Is there any photophobia?
Keratitis, iritis, glaucoma
What is enopthalmos?
Posterior displacement of the eyeball within the orbit
Signs of blow-out fracture
Patients with blowout fractures may have enopthalmos with limitation of eye movements, particularly upward and downward gaze
Is the eye sticky
Bacterial conjunctivitis
Blepharitis
What might an enlarged blind spot be a sign of?
Swollen optic disc
Anisocoria
Asymmetry between pupils
Lack of a normal consensual pupillary response may suggest
Damage to one or both optic nerves
Damage to Edinger-Westphal nucleus
