Q

What do I need to do in an ‘analyse’ question

A

Same things as ‘explain’ question (evidence etc), but FURTHER EXPLAIN THE EVIDENCE BY TALKING ABOUT WHAT THEY MEAN AND WHAT THE IMPACT OF THE EVIDENCE IS

eg: identifying and examining the creator of the source, the explicit/implicit message contained in the source, the perspective of the source etc.;

What do I need to do in an ‘evaluate’ question?

A

Analyse and explain my evidence, and using this info, say if the source is reliable, unreliable, helpful or unhelpful

eg: making judgements on the reliability and the usefulness of the source, based on your analysis. For example, you might’ve drawn some conclusions about the reliability of the source based on your analysis of the origin of the source

Q

Define feudalism

A

Feudalism is the social hierarchy in which the party with the most money and land had the most power, and the party with the least of these attributes were at the bottom. Created by Charlemagne, feudalism was an incredibly popular structure for maintaining order within kingdoms during the Middle Ages. In feudalism, fealty (pledging loyalty to the higher party) was a key part of how it worked, and arguably a key part of its success.

Q

What was the main reason feudalism developed in Western Europe?

A

The main reason for feudalism was for the monarch to be able to protect the entirety of their land, by splitting its ownership up to nobles (or people whom the monarch trusted), who then in turn give a portion of their land to knights, who swear fealty to the nobles in exchange for providing protection.

Q

Why is the Bayeux Tapestry valuable to humans?

A

The Bayeux Tapestry is so valuable to historians for many reasons. Firstly, because it is the only credible relic they have that depicts the Battle of Hastings (despite being from a Norman perspective), and secondly because the medieval times have such little information of their way of life due to the lack of literacy and biased perspectives in which many of the referenced texts were written (written by wealthy men), that the Bayeux Tapestry is a richly-detailed visual that can inform historians military tactics, the food they ate and the way they lived.
