Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson, also known as “Old Hickory” is a past president who approved the Indian Removal Act which tortured the Native American people of the Cherokee tribe. He was seen by some as an abuser of his power and the Constitution.
Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery and became a big abolitionist who shared his story about his experience with others.
The Cherokee
The Cherokee are a tribe of Native Americans who were forced to leave their homes and head on a journey on what is now known as the “Trail of Tears”. This was part of the Indian Removal Act that president Andrew Jackson initiated. Many suffered and died on the trail.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was a previous slave and abolitionist who helped free slaves using the Underground Railroad. She was known as the “conductor”.
Irish Immigrants
The Irish immigrants traveled to America during the potato famine when many needed food. Nativists in the U.S. hated them.
German Immigrants
The German immigrants also traveled to America but they did it to escape the economic hardship that they were facing in Germany. They were also hated by some Americans.
President James K. Polk
President James K. Polk expanded the U.S. more than any other president after Jefferson. He acquired the Mexican Cession.
John Brown
John Brown was a very strong abolitionist who raided a federal arsenal. He also killed many people in the South who supported slavery. Northerners saw him as a hero but Southerners were scared and hated him.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe is the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book depicting the horrors of slavery. She was also a big abolitionist.
The Free-Soil Party
The Free-Soil Party was a small political party in America that was against the extension of slavery in the west.
The Republican Party
The Republican party was formally known as the Free-Soil Party and they wanted to prevent the expansion of slavery. They consisted of farmers, factory workers, businessmen, and other people within those fields.
Dred Scott
Dred Scott was a slave that traveled with his wife and slave owner to a free state. He then said that he was a free man since he had spent a long time in a free state and sued the courts for it. In court, he was then told that he was not a citizen and was only property.
Monroe Doctrine
It was written by John Quinsy Adams and opposed European colonialism in the Western hemisphere. It also said that an intervention in political affairs by foreign people was a hostile act against the U.S..
Spoils system
The spoils system is when a president elects people who are friends or who support him into public office. This happened with Andrew Jackson where he only elected supporters.
The Era of Good Feelings
Occurred after the War of 1812. The Era of Good Feelings was when, during James Monroe’s presidency, people were positive and feeling good. It was when people were mostly united.
