What objects can we look at to find out how people live/lived?
The things that they have thrown away
What was the area where Pinelands is before it was a suburb?
A FARM called “Uitvlugt” where thousands of pine tress were planted, and became a FOREST RESERVE. It was also used as an army camp in the Anglo-Boer war (1898-1902).
What are garden cities?
New towns that were PLANNED to provide
- pleasant living environments with
- public parks
- space for schools
- playing fields
- hospitals
- churches, shops and
- most importantly businesses and industries to employ residents of the twons
Why were garden cities invented?
As a response to the appalling conditions that many English people lived in at the start of the 20th century (around 1900)

19 June 1919 when the government granted the Uitvlug forest reserve to the Garden Cities trustees (for creating Pinelands)
