how old is the postal system?
thousands of years
what can be a problem swith the postal system?
it can be very unreliable
takes a long time
letter are sometimes lost and never arrive
what is a post stone?
a special stone on Robben Island that the first European sailors left letters underneath for ships returning to Eurpoe to take back with them
Describe the today’s postal system?
- Mail can be sent ANYWHERE in the world
- the sender pays in advance usually by buying STAMPS to put on the mail
- people put letters & package into a postbox
- we also use COURIER services to send mail & packages
What is a radio?
a form of communication invented about 100 years ago,
that sent and received signals without using wires,
so that people could listen to programmes in their OWN HOMES
why was the radio sometimes called a wireless?
it sent radio signals without wires
why was the radio so popular?
because people could listen to entertainment in their OWN HOMES. in the 1920s the stations were broadcasting news, music, sports, drama and variety
who invented the radio?
many clever people contributed but mainly GUGLIELMO MARCONI who was an Italian teenager who was fascinated by radio signals. He won a Nobel Prize for his work
what is a television?
a device that invented in 1930s that allowed people to hear sound and see moving pictures on a screen
when did people in South Africa get television
in 1976
why was the television a good invention?
because it has many benefits, such as:
- LEARB about the world (with news and programmes about animals/space/history)
- brings families and friends TOGETHER to watch SPORT and favourite shows
- entertainment
- teaches new things (cooking, music)
why was the television a bad invention?
it has many negative effect, such as:
- encourages LAZINESS (watching too much and not exercising or playing outside)
- too much can be bad for our eyes and HEALYH
- violent/SCARY shows can make people afraid/worried
- can WASTE TIME (instead of reading/learning/spending time with family/friend)
How should you write an answer that needs to be paragraph?
Use HAMBURGER paragraph writing
what is the QWERTY keyboard?
the keyboard designed to stop the letters JAMming when people typed QUICKLY on the old non-electric typewrites
named from the first 5 letters on the top right
Why do computers use the QWERTY keyboard?
because people were used to it
who invented the telegraph?
Samuel Morse
what code did the telegraph use?
Morse code which is a combination of dots and dashes. Each letter of the alphabet has it’s own combination of dots and dashes
how did telegraphs work?
- the sender TYPE in the dots and dashes
- the SIGNAL was sent to the receiver
- the receiver (machine/device) made a PAPER copy with raised dots and dashes
- the receiver (person) TRANSLATED the dots and dashes
