What is pinioning and why did they do it years ago?
Pinioning is the practice of amputating a section of the birds’ wing at the pinion joint on one side, preventing them from taking off. This allowed zoos to keep them in open exhibits.

What was the 1st generation of animal enclosure like?
Animals on the inside, public on the outside. Animals were visibly contained and no attempt at landscaping.

Functional.

Animals in social groupings, climate and planting and public in the same space – fully immersive and animals moving freely.
