WHy do they do collection planning?

A

What species to have in the future and why
Zoo managers will use a collection plan to choose:
- Their role (justification) within the collection (e.g. breeding, ambassadors, public demand etc.) Ambassador - face of zoo
- Which species are held in the collection
- Social groupings (e.g. M/F mixes, min. and max. numbers)
- Space/ money for needed for enclosures
- Research and wild application potential

A

to act as an insurance population (in case the species goes extinct in the wild) and/or for reintroduction to the wild.
