History Of The Periodic Table Flashcards
The early periodic table and the modern periodic table, how mendeleev changed the way the elements were arranged
How were the elements arranged in the periodic table
They were arranged in order of atomic weight
What were the problems with this arrangement
Many atoms were placed next to each other which were reactive and some which were not and this didn’t make much sense. It was also incomplete ,, many elements had not been discovered yet
How did Mendeleev overcome these problems
He left gaps in the periodic table in which scientist could place the elements they discover. He also changed the order and switched the elements around if needed
What are columns in the periodic table called
Groups
What law did John Newland publish and what was it
The law of octaves. It was the law that every 8 elements in the periodic table reacted in the same way and had similar properties
What law did Johann Dobereiner think of
The law of triads. He realised that when elements had similar properties or reacted similarly they were usually in threes
