A treaty in 843 between Charlemegne’s three grandsons that split up the Frankish empire into France, Germany, and a third kingdom that eventually went away.

(1517-1648) Wars stemming from a saint, Martin Luther, accusing the pope of transgressions. The root was Luther didn’t think you could effect your other-worldly fate whereas the Roman Catholics did.

Difference between the French and US conception of rights.
The French held that rights were not inalienable and were instead dependent on democratic vote - i.e., they had a social theory of rights. For the US, rights were inalienable and could not be restricted by vote.
Weimar Republic
The Weimar Republic is an unofficial historical designation for the German state from 1918 to 1933. The name derives from the city of Weimar, where its constitutional assembly first took place.
