History of genetics Flashcards
what characteristics do the ideal organisms have in genetic research?
short life span, prolific, small, invertebrate, low reproductive rate.
what are three differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Pros have no nucleus, cytoskeleton or membrane-bound organelles. eukes have all 3.
3 forms of prokaryotes?
eubacteria (common), archaebacteria (rare) and cynobacteria (found in photosynthetic cells)
what is independent assortment?
alleles of different genes assort themselves to different gametes randomly.
what is non-independent assortment?
when alleles on the same chromosome are inherited together.
what is pleiotropy?
when many phenotypes are controlled by one allele.
what is epistasis?
when many alleles control one phenotype.
