application of molecular genetics Flashcards
what is restriction endonuclease?
an enzyme that cuts fragments of DNA that need to be transcribed.
what is ligase?
the enzyme that repairs the fragment of DNA.
what is a multi-cloning site?
the point at which desired DNA is inserted into a circular piece of bacterial DNA so it can produce the desired protein in a lab.
what is transformation?
the introduction of non-viral DNA into the genetic code of a cell.
what is transfiction?
the introduction of a whole strand of DNA into a cell.
what is deoxy-sequencing?
like gel electrophoresis but then bases are tagged with fluorescent tags that are scanned by a laser.
what is a mini-satellite?
a sequence of 10-60 bases.
what is a micro-satellite?
a sequence of 2-6 bases that repeat in short tandem repeats.
what is ex-vivo gene therapy?
cell removed, treated and placed back in patients body.
what is in-situ gene therapy?
carrier of the gene is injected directly into the patients body.
what is in-vivo gene therapy?
vector administers the gene directly into the cell.
what is a retro-virus vector?
integrate genetic material into chromosome.
what is an adenovirus vector?
‘infect’ cells with therapeutic gene.
