Lesson 8: Funerary Customs
What did burial customs show about ancient Chinese beliefs?
It showed their belief in life or death
How are customs in ancient China, similar to those of Ancient Egypt?
They wanted to be buried with things, that would be useful to them in the next life and show their status
How was the wealthy buried? With what and why?
They were buried in wonderful tombs with beautiful decorations, such as sculptures, and artworks to show how wealthy the person was. Sometimes they even had servants buried as well for the afterlife
What are inscriptions? What inscriptions did the wealthy have for their burials?
They are usually carved messages/writing. The inscriptions usually showed how much items cost in a wealthy persons tomb
What did emperors sometimes have buried with them? Why?
They sometimes buried servants because they wanted to be kept safe in the afterlife
What were the tombs of the Han Dynasty like? Why do you think that is?
The tombs were built within a large wall complex that included buildings, gateways, observation towers and avenues along with stone figures in human and animal form standing guard. Thus was done so they couldn’t be raided/stolen from
What was the Qing Ming Festival? When did it originate?
It was a festival where people visited their ancestors’ graves, bringing offerings and paying respects and it originated in the 7th century BCE
