1. An eastern section, comprising about ⅓ of its land area- China’s historic and farming heartland
2. The remaining ⅔, comprising China’s land to the north and west, where both the climate and landforms make the area unsuitable for farming

- Developed along river valleys in the eastern section:
- Huang River (Huang He)
- Yangtze River (Chang Jiang)
- Xi River
- Zhu Jiang Delta
- Provided water supplies and transport routes and caused significant floods
- Floods created rich farmland along the course of the river
