Slavery and the slave trade
What is slavery and what was the slave trade ?
- Slavery refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they like and at what they work
- Slavery had previously existed throughout history, in many times and most places. The ancient Greecks, the Romans, Incas and Aztecs all had slaves
What was it like on a slave ship ?
It was filled with hundreds and hundreds of slaves
- They couldnt stand up some got sea sick and their food wasnt very nutritional for exercise they would make them dance and who ever got sick they would throw then to the sea
Punishment
- Slaves were often brutally punished for misbehaving
- Punishments included whipping, branding, being golo, gagged, and other torturous methods were used
- The treatment of slaves depended on their owner
What was the life of a slave like ?
- Slaves usually lived in poor quality shacks which were overcrowded
- Furniture (if any) was very poor with beds often being made of rags or straw
- However some house slaves did live in better conditions
Why was slavery abolished?
There were 3 reasons because of money, because of religion, and because they noticed that what they were doing was wrong
The Transatlantic Slave Trade
- The slave trade refers to the transatlantic (across the Atlanatic Ocean) trading patters which were established as early as the 16th century
- Slaves were sold or traded in Africa and taken to the Caribbean or to America. From there, goods were taken to Europe
- Over a period of move than 300 years, move than 12.5 million slaves were transported
The triangular trade
By the end of the 17th century, a triangular trade was firmly established.
- From Britain and Europe ships with manufactured goods, headed to Africa
- The final leg of the triangular trade route was thhe return to america with their holds full of slaves
- Ships loaded with cotton, timber, tobacco and furs crossed the Atlantic to Britain and Europe
The middle passage
- Perphaps the most dangerous leg pf the transatlantic slave trade was the ‘the middle passage’
- This was the section of the journey in which slaves were transported from Africa, across the Atlantic Ocean to America
- The journey wold have lasted anywhere from one to six months
- Slaves were packed below deck, often in chains, where they were forced to lie side by side in cramped conditions with little headroom

How was slave justified ?
- RELIGIOUS : there were stories of slavery in the bible, so people thought that the slave trade was ok
- ECONOMIC : slaves could be sold for $1,200 each people which meant that people who bought them over made lot of money
- BELIEFS : people thought that black african people were dangerous or that it made them happier
What happened after the middle passage ?
- After the middle passage slave turned from people into possesion
- Most slaves stopped in the wset indies and most were then moved to either north or south america
- families were often moved apart people is names were changed and black people were often not allowed to speak their own language
Why was the slave trade abolished ?
- For many years , anti-slavery citivists were pushing for the slave trade to be abolished
- For religious, finacial and social reasons, slavery was starting to be seen as a human right issue
- Britain abolished the trading of slaves oficially in 1807
- Slavery in many places continued afterwards in USA, slavery was officially abolished in 1865
Empire
- An empire is a collection of areas of land or even countries that are ruled over and controllled by one leading or mother country
- The places controlled by the mother country are usually called colonies
Why do empires expand ?
- TRADE : finding new foods, medicine, etc…
- POWER: taking over new countries to stop other enemy european countries, and getting locals to become part of an army
- RELIGION : trying to spread christianity
- AMBITION : hoping to get rich and famous for new discoveries
- ADVENTURE : wanting to explore and learn about new lands and people
- PORTS : hoping to find somewhere that can be set up as a stop-off on long journeys
