They needed to use steel, the strongest material ever.

At the age of 33, Carnegie unites America with the opening of the St Louis bridge
to convince people it is safe, an elephant walks across it because of the myth the elephants won’t cross unstable structures
Causes of the new Bridge
Steel orders rise, railroad owners wanting to replace their tracks with stronger material
Carnegie and Tom Scott raises 21 million and build his first steel plant.
The 100 acre steel mill is the country’s largest capable of producing 225 tonnes a day.

Carnegie blames Rockefeller and seeks revenge because he moved his oil off railroads

Now he is producing 10,000 tons of steel a month and making 1.5 million profits per year

This makes him the richest man in America even thought Rockefeller is worth more then him.
